For generations, gold has been the classic answer to a familiar financial question: Where do you put your money when you want to preserve its value?
Now, as investing becomes increasingly digital, some Filipinos are looking beyond the traditional safe haven and exploring a combination of established and emerging assets — including Bitcoin.
The shift reflects a broader change in how people think about building wealth. Rather than choosing between traditional investments and digital assets, investors are increasingly looking at how different assets can work together within a diversified portfolio.
In Asia, the appetite for gold remains strong. The Economist has reported that Asian countries account for 64.5% of global demand for gold jewelry and bullion, while the World Gold Council has highlighted the growing interest in digital forms of gold.
For investors accustomed to gold, the move into digital assets may therefore be less of a leap than it first appears.
“Today, Filipinos are looking for ways to protect the value of their hard-earned money amid everyday financial pressures,” said Alden Paul Yburan, Head of GCrypto. “By offering digital gold and curated crypto options side-by-side, GCash aims to enable users to build long-term financial resilience and balance their portfolios right within a platform they already trust.”
Gold’s timeless appeal, without the vault

Gold has long been viewed as a hedge against inflation and economic uncertainty. But owning physical gold can come with practical considerations — from storage and security to the need to visit a dealer when buying or selling.
Digital gold offers a more convenient alternative.
Through GCrypto on GCash, users can buy digital gold starting at ₱500 and build their holdings gradually. GOLD in GCrypto is insured, certified and backed 1:1 by physical gold stored in high-security vaults in Switzerland, according to GCash.
The platform also allows users to monitor, buy and sell their holdings digitally, making gold accessible without the logistics traditionally associated with physical ownership.
For newer investors, that accessibility can make it easier to start small and develop a consistent investing habit.
Where Bitcoin enters the picture

Gold may offer a sense of stability, but investors seeking greater growth potential are also increasingly looking at Bitcoin.
The cryptocurrency has become one of the most prominent digital assets in the world, attracting investors who see its potential as a long-term addition to a diversified portfolio.
Research from Bitwise has suggested that a modest Bitcoin allocation has historically improved the risk-adjusted returns of diversified portfolios. However, Bitcoin remains a highly volatile asset, and its price can move sharply in either direction.
That difference is precisely what makes the combination of gold and Bitcoin interesting to some investors.
“When you pair them, they complement each other perfectly to balance your portfolio: when traditional markets dip, digital gold acts as your cushion, and when technology and digital adoption skyrocket, Bitcoin acts as your accelerator,” Yburan said.
The idea isn’t necessarily to replace one asset with another. Instead, it is about understanding that different investments can serve different roles.
Gold can provide exposure to an asset traditionally associated with wealth preservation, while Bitcoin offers exposure to a newer, more volatile digital asset class.
Making the transition without juggling multiple apps

For Filipinos curious about cryptocurrency, one of the biggest hurdles can simply be knowing where to begin.
GCrypto aims to make that transition more straightforward by allowing users to access both digital gold and Bitcoin through the GCash app.
Users can start exploring Bitcoin from ₱500, the same entry point offered for digital gold, allowing investors to make smaller purchases rather than committing a large amount of money at once.
The platform also provides access to A Beginner’s Guide to Crypto, designed to help users understand Bitcoin and other major tokens before making investment decisions.
GCrypto says the tokens available on its platform are curated based on factors including market strength and credibility — an approach intended to help users navigate the risks associated with lesser-known projects and so-called “rug pulls,” where project creators abandon a cryptocurrency project after raising funds.
“Transitioning from a stable asset like gold into the broader world of cryptocurrency follows that same user-friendly path,” Yburan said. “Growing investors can gain direct exposure to Bitcoin —historically one of the fastest-growing modern asset classes — without the hassle of managing multiple external applications.”
Diversification, not replacement
The growing accessibility of digital investments doesn’t mean traditional financial strategies are disappearing.
If anything, it is giving investors more options.
For someone already familiar with gold, Bitcoin can represent a step into a different kind of asset rather than a complete departure from a familiar investment strategy. The key, as with any investment decision, is understanding the role each asset plays—and the risks that come with it.
That distinction is particularly important with cryptocurrency. Bitcoin’s potential for higher returns comes alongside significant price volatility, and past performance does not guarantee future results.
For investors, the bigger conversation may therefore be less about gold versus Bitcoin and more about how different assets can fit into a financial strategy built around their individual goals, risk tolerance and time horizon.
After all, diversification isn’t about abandoning what has worked for generations. It’s about making room for what comes next.
For GCash users interested in exploring the options, GCrypto is available through the Invest tab of the GCash app.
