The Philippines is betting on two powerful drivers to attract more visitors: the global appeal of P-pop and stronger international air connectivity.

Within two days, the government announced that P-pop sensation BINI will become the country’s newest tourism ambassador, while the Philippine Airlines (PAL) revealed plans to expand its flights to Canada later this year — developments that signal a renewed push to bring more travelers to the country.

For the Department of Tourism (DOT), BINI’s appointment reflects a growing recognition that music and pop culture have become powerful tools for destination marketing, particularly among younger audiences.

Tourism Secretary Dita Angara-Mathay confirmed that the girl group is set to serve as the DOT’s newest tourism ambassador, although the formal signing is still being finalized.

“We are aligned,” Angara-Mathay told reporters after the group’s courtesy visit to the DOT headquarters in Makati City.

She noted that each member of BINI has strong ties to different provinces and communities across the country, giving the group an authentic connection to the destinations they will help promote.

The partnership comes after a landmark year for BINI, whose international profile has continued to grow through hit songs such as PantropikoSalamin, Salamin, and Cherry on Top, as well as its performance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

DOT Assistant Secretary Ren Sapitan said discussions with the group began after Coachella, describing the courtesy call as the beginning of what the agency hopes will be a long-term collaboration.

The DOT has also indicated that it plans to partner with another P-pop group as part of its broader tourism campaign.

More flights, easier access

While celebrity ambassadors can inspire people to visit, getting to the Philippines still depends on available flights — and that’s where PAL’s latest announcement comes in.

Starting Nov. 17, the airline will increase its Manila–Vancouver service from seven to ten flights a week. Less than a month later, on Dec. 5, Manila–Toronto flights will increase from three to four weekly services.

The expansion was welcomed by Philippine Ambassador to Canada Jose Victor Chan-Gonzaga, who said improved air connectivity would help deepen economic ties while making travel between the two countries more convenient.

The additional flights also arrive as the DOT steps up its promotional efforts in Canada, one of the Philippines’ fastest-growing tourism markets.

Government figures show that 333,136 Canadians visited the Philippines in 2025, up sharply from 269,300 in 2024, making Canada the country’s fifth-largest source of international visitors.

The Philippine Embassy in Canada is likewise expanding tourism initiatives such as its annual Winter Escapade program to encourage more Canadians to explore destinations across the archipelago.

Taken together, the two announcements highlight the DOT’s evolving strategy for tourism promotion. One focuses on inspiring future travelers through homegrown cultural icons, while the other makes it easier for those visitors to reach Philippine shores.

As competition for international travelers continues to intensify, the combination of cultural influence and better connectivity could prove to be one of the country’s strongest tourism assets.
