Before their feet even touch the floor, many Filipinos are already reaching for their phones. Some check their inbox, others scroll through social media, catch up on the news, or organize their day.
As the hours pass, however, that same device becomes far more than a communication tool — it transforms into a wallet, a bank, a transport pass, and even a shopping hub.
What was once a simple communication tool has become an essential companion for navigating everyday life, a shift reflected in the high screen time among Filipinos. Much of that transformation has been driven by the rise of so-called “super apps.”
What makes a super app “super”?

Super apps are called “super” for a reason.
These digital platforms combine multiple services — including financial tools — into a single digital ecosystem.
What makes them even more powerful is embedded finance, which allows financial services such as digital payments, loans, savings, insurance, and investments to be built directly into non-financial platforms.
Instead of downloading separate apps for different tasks, users can manage multiple aspects of their daily lives in one place. That means spending less time switching between apps and more time getting things done.
Take Celine Villanueva, a college student currently staying in a dormitory. For her, super apps have become indispensable.
“Ngayon na nasa dorm ako tapos malayo ako sa pamilya ko, hindi ko kaya nang walang super apps kasi doon pinapadala sa akin yung pera. So, technically, yun ang nagse-serve bilang wallet ko para sa pagbabayad ng rent, shopping bills, and utilities,” Celine shared.
“On a daily basis, mas nag-o-opt ako gamitin ang MariBank kaysa magbayad gamit ang cash kasi nga less hassle… pati mas convenient siya,” she added.
For consumers like Celine, that’s what makes super apps truly “super” — compact platforms packed with countless possibilities.
From digital wallet to daily companion

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the world pivoted almost entirely online. Access to gadgets and reliable internet suddenly became essential for staying connected with family and friends, working, studying, shopping, and finding entertainment.
But those digital habits persisted even after quarantine restrictions were lifted and face-to-face interactions resumed.
Much of this lasting shift has been driven by platforms such as GCash, Maya, and other digital wallets. Originally designed as alternatives to cash, they have since evolved into comprehensive digital ecosystems.
While storing money and facilitating payments remain their core functions, these platforms now offer a wide range of services, including savings and investment products, insurance, digital lending, online shopping, food delivery, transportation, travel bookings, and even access to government services.
Today, they are no longer just a temporary solution born out of a global crisis — they have become indispensable companions that empower Filipinos in many aspects of daily life.

Throughout the day, super apps and their financial services blend seamlessly into everyday activities. Most people don’t even realize they’re using multiple tools—they’re simply going about their daily routines.
Imagine a typical workday for an office worker who relies on a super app.
In the morning, they book a Grab ride to the office, buy a cup of coffee, and top up their mobile load — all with just a few taps on their phone.
During breaktime, they order lunch through the same app. They can even reserve movie tickets for the weekend or book flights and accommodations for an upcoming trip.
After work, they pay their utility bills, transfer money to a family member, and set aside part of their salary in a digital savings account—all without stepping inside a bank branch or payment center.
Before going to bed, they shop on Lazada or Shopee for household essentials or a new outfit, earn reward points or cashback, and even use Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) for bigger purchases.
Embedded in the Filipino lifestyle

Not too long ago, the idea of doing so many things from a single device seemed almost unimaginable. Today, that convenience has become second nature, gradually reshaping the way Filipinos live.
As super apps continue evolving beyond basic cashless payments, millions of Filipinos now rely on their smartphones more than ever.
By bringing together digital payments, banking, shopping, transportation, and other everyday services on one pocket-sized screen, these platforms have fundamentally changed how people manage their time, money, and daily routines.
Each feature may seem ordinary on its own, but together they demonstrate why super apps have become deeply embedded in the everyday lives of Filipinos.
