Not your ordinary Hot Pot, but is it extraordinary? Jiang Nan Hot Pot, SM Marilao

After enduring five hours of speeches, marches, and awards, our daughter’s senior high graduation was finally over.

We were determined to celebrate her freedom from secondary education and our liberation from such a long-winded ceremony.

So off we went to a nearby mall, where we hoped to catch the last call for orders. Famished and frazzled, we found ourselves at Jiang Nan Hot Pot in SM Marilao.

So why not get the most out of our visit and review the restaurant for our cherished readers?

Jiang Nan Hot Pot’s website says, “Not your ordinary hotpot” is their tagline. Challenge accepted.

Atmosphere and service

We just managed to catch the last call for orders, so the place was more on the quiet side.

You do get the hum of a restaurant that knows its identity. The lighting was warm enough for conversation but bright enough to see what you were cooking. Seating was comfortable, and the tables were generously spaced.  Crowding wouldn’t be an issue even during lunch or dinner crowd.

Jiang Nan Hot Pot leans into Chinese traditional design cues (lanterns, warm tones, wooden furnishings) while keeping the space practical and modern enough for a high-volume, all-you-can-eat operation.

The setup is good for families and friends, with the option to join the long tables. I wouldn’t recommend that kids run around since the tables have those sharp corners.

Service was attentive without hovering. Our server politely walked us through the broth options. Thanks to the crew’s calm, relaxed demeanor, we didn’t feel rushed about taking a table past 8 p.m.

Food — The star

We ordered the hot pot Yuan Yang set — the split pot of spicy and light ginger broths. One taste and we knew it was the right choice.

The spicy side had the kind of slow, building heat that earns your respect, while the ginger broth was clean and deeply savory.

The beef was the clear standout of the night: tender, well-marbled, and rich with flavor. A word of caution, however — do not let it stew.

Thirty seconds in the hot broth is all it needs. Leave it longer and you’ve turned something sublime into something sad.

The broth and the basics

Mains and the Miss

The variety of add-ons — dumplings, fish balls, mushrooms, and leafy greens — was genuinely impressive. Each brought something different to the pot. If we had to name a weak link, it was one of the processed balls that arrived tasting more filler than flavor. Not offensive, just forgettable.

The can’t-miss item? The beef, without question. Order as much as you can finish. Trust the broth. Don’t overcook it.

Jiang Nan Hot Pot value and final verdict

At ₱699 per person, the Yuan Yang broth, mushroom, pork, and beef hotpot set is honest value for the quality on the table.

Just add ₱300 more, and you get the barbecue set as well — charcoal grills and all — for those who want to do both.

But I swear, you’ll be happy with the hotpot already.

This is not a quiet romantic dinner spot. It is perfect for celebrations, post-graduation feasts, or any occasion where the point is abundance and good company.

The price is not something you want to spend weekly or even monthly but it’s a good choice if you want to impress the girl, celebrate your wedding anniversary, or splurge for your kid’s graduation.

So yes, Jiang Nan Hot Pot largely lives up to its tagline. Not every element is extraordinary, but the broth is, and the beef is. That counts for a lot when you’re tired, hungry, and ready to celebrate, especially if you’re in Bulacan.

Rating: 4 out of 5 — Come for the Yuan Yang. Stay for the beef.
