I, the Executioner rules Korean box office

Korean action-comedy I, the Executioner, raced to the top of the charts of the Korean box office with $15 million in haul.

I, The Executioner is a buddy cop movie about a veteran officer Detective Do-cheol teaming up new hot-shot cop named Sun-woo, who freshly joined the major crimes unit after idolizing Do-cheol for years.

The duo is chasing after a vigilante who seems to be getting public support after executing some nefarious individuals who escaped justice. Copycat killers have also sprung up to further complicate the investigation.

I,the Executioner known in Korea as Veteran 2 is a sequel written and directed by the same writer-director Ryoo Seung-wan. Other films of Ryoo that may be familiar to Filipino audiences are  Smugglers, Battleship Island, and Escape from Mogadishu.

Lead actor Hwang Jung-min portrays the gritty veteran detective. Hwang was also seen in The Wailing, New World, and A Bitter Sweet Life all rating 7.0 and higher on IMDb

The rookie cop is played by Jung Hae-in also known for Tune in For Love, DP, While You Were Sleeping, and Start-Up.

Data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic) showed that the film enjoyed a market share of 86% between Friday and Sunday. 2.09 million spectators watched it.

You’d normally expect films about serial killers to be grim and disturbing, but surprisingly, the comedy came out naturally.

Do give this movie a try.
