Banwa Private Island is proud to share its recent initiatives supporting biodiversity conservation through art and education.
In the heart of Palawan, where the turquoise waters of the Sulu Sea meet pristine white sands, Banwa Private Island stands as a beacon of biodiversity conservation.
Beyond its reputation as a luxury destination, this secluded paradise is dedicated to protecting the natural world through innovative initiatives that merge art and education with sustainability efforts.

Ms. Samantha Kaspar, the talented artist holding the symbolic ribbon, showcases her passion for nature through her vibrant artworks
Banwa Private Island’s recent art exhibition, “Biodiversity in Full Color,” is a shining example of this commitment, highlighting the delicate balance of nature while inspiring action to protect it.
The one-night-only exhibit, which featured the works of renowned artist Samantha Kaspar, was a celebration of the island’s rich biodiversity.
Kaspar, known for her vibrant and evocative paintings, has a profound passion for nature, which is clearly reflected in her work.
Her art captures the vivid colors and intricate details of the island’s flora and fauna, including the majestic creatures that inhabit the surrounding seas and forests.

From the vibrant corals and fish that thrive in Banwa’s marine ecosystem to the native Tabon Bird and Mantanani Scops Owl, her paintings serve as both a tribute to nature and a call to action.
Banwa Private Island’s commitment to environmental stewardship
As part of its ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship, Banwa Private Island has been recognized as one of the Philippines’ top 10 Important Shark and Ray Areas (ISRA), underscoring the island’s role in preserving these vulnerable species.
Sharks and rays, often misunderstood and threatened by human activity, play a crucial role in maintaining marine ecosystems. This recognition highlights the island’s critical importance in safeguarding these animals and their habitats for future generations.
Banwa’s conservation efforts, however, extend far beyond marine life. The island has also embarked on significant research projects aimed at protecting its terrestrial ecosystems, including studies on the nesting habits of the Tabon Bird and the preservation of the indigenous beach forests that provide shelter for these unique species.
These projects are part of a broader initiative spearheaded by the island’s Aquos Foundation, which is dedicated to promoting biodiversity conservation through both scientific research and community engagement.
“We are incredibly proud to support Samantha Kaspar’s work and share her vision of protecting the natural world,” said Janet Oquendo, Island Manager of Banwa Private Island. “Her paintings beautifully capture the essence of our island’s ecosystems, reminding us of the delicate balance we must preserve. Conservation is at the core of what we do here, and through our ongoing research and sustainability initiatives, we hope to inspire others to take action in protecting our planet’s fragile ecosystems.”
The “Biodiversity in Full Color” exhibition was not just a celebration of art—it was also an educational experience designed to inspire a deeper connection with nature. The event attracted visitors from around the world, including environmentalists, artists, and conservation advocates, all of whom were moved by Kaspar’s ability to bring the natural world to life on canvas.
Inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards
Banwa Private Island’s commitment to education doesn’t stop at art. In partnership with the Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park Management Office and the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity, the island recently launched an initiative aimed at inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards.
Local students from Tumarbong Elementary School were introduced to the book “Mga Hero ng Planetang Blue,” a beautifully illustrated story that encourages young readers to become guardians of the environment. The Filipino youth commonly encounter challenges such as misinformation, cyberbullying, and online exploitation. Their limited digital literacy leaves them susceptible to these risks, which is where Media and Information Literacy (MIL) becomes indispensable.
Through this partnership, Banwa Private Island hopes to instil a sense of responsibility in future generations, teaching them the importance of preserving our planet’s biodiversity.
As Banwa Private Island continues its conservation journey, it remains a leader in promoting sustainable practices through the power of art and education. By supporting local and global initiatives, the island is playing a pivotal role in raising awareness about the urgent need to protect the natural world.
Through efforts like “Biodiversity in Full Color” and the introduction of “Mga Hero ng Planetang Blue,” Banwa Private Island demonstrates that the future of conservation lies not just in scientific research, but also in fostering a deeper understanding of the beauty and interconnectedness of all living things.
Whether through a stroke of a paintbrush or the turn of a page, Banwa’s initiatives are a reminder that we all have a role to play in safeguarding the planet for future generations.
